Her music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Martin Sexton; at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. Enter in a lovely small body Nashville Tuned acoustic guitar, and the result was 10 new songs about love, God and life. With her last release highlighting Cohn's first love of the piano and slick modern production values that she explored while living in Mexico City, it was a breath of fresh Northern California air that led her back to simplicity and acoustic roots.

Tuesday, October 16 ~

J.R. Byrd first knew he was destined to be a songwriter when he realized he was too slow & too short to play in the National Basketball Association. With his b-ball dreams dashed, he resorted to practicing gloomy Chopin nocturnes. With a little instrumental facility under his belt, Byrd began writing simple gooey love songs for various middle school crushes, which in turn often netted him Hershey Kisses, but never kiss kisses. It wasnt until his senior year of high school when he played the greasy role of Kenickie that girls started to notice J.R.s vocal lightning. In music school Byrds song-smithing got all growns up, and he really delved into the acoustic guitar as his main songwriting tool. Now, Byrds main focus is on continuing to develop as a wicked, yet somewhat righteous, solo artist.

Mare Wakefield ~ Versatility and love for travel is evident in Mares music. Listeners roam through Arizona deserts, Oklahoma oil fields and South Dakota plains, and take side-trips to ancient Babylon or the streets of Amsterdam. The journeys go inward too, exploring valor and valentines, hope and heartbreak, and the occasional whiskey-soaked barroom brawl. Story and song are woven seamlessly together by Mares intimate delivery and gift for melody. Currently based in Nashville, Marepronounced Marycontinues her journey by co-writing with hit songwriters and burning up the highways with her piano-playing husband (aptly named Nomad!) and Martin acoustic guitar in tow.

At 9:20pm: Annrenee Jones resumed music in earnest about 12 years ago, now with a 6 string Gibson guitar as my alter ego. My tastes havent changed much; in addition to my high school heroes, I count Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kim Richey, the Indigo Girls, and Jackson Browne among my influences. Music as therapy drove me to songwriting just short of 6 years ago (its a lot cheaper); I continue to work out lifes conflicts big and small there, and hope that my songs can somehow help others do the same.
